The Craft Divas
Its been awhile but with the holiday season and just day to day life Bizzy Lady and I haven’t updated our blog lately.
For Black Friday Bizzy Lady and I instead of being in the stores shopping with the crowds, we actually did our shopping on the internet for purse patterns.
It is so funny how we said once upon a time that we wouldn’t making purses, totes or anything like that and now we are obsessed with making them.
Below are a few photos of purses I have made recently.
Happy Friday Everyone,
Just like Bizzy Lady, I purchased the Janome HD3000 for bag making and received it last week. I am so in love with this machine. It handles the thick or bulk of fabric that is needed for totes and purses.
Lately I have been obsessed with bag making. If you have made bags, totes or pouches, you know that sometimes you sew through many layers. I have a Brother Innovis Quattro 2 that is my main machine, quilting and embroidery. I also have my travel machine which is a lightweight Brother Sewing Machine. It was my primary machine prior to me acquiring the Quattro 2.
Although I love my Quattro 2, it doesn’t like sewing through the layers when I am bag making. I was working on a bag and bent my needle bar, fortunately the machine was still under warranty. The inconvenience is that the warranty is a carry-in and the shop is 45 minutes from my home. They had it for 2 weeks.
So after hearing the tales of woe of others and my own experience, I started to do some research. I saw that many were buying a heavy duty machine dedicated to handle the more stressful projects like demin, leather/vinyl, and bag making. After further research, I decided on the Janome HD 3000.
Not a lot of bells and whistles. Unboxed it and was up and running in no time. The machine is surprisingly quiet, more so than my primary machine. I made a pouch (Clobird Designs Tulip Zipper Case) and so far I really like the machine.
I expect that you will be seeing a lot of projects made with my new baby.
Until next time…..
Bizzy Lady and I taught an Applique Class to our guild members and a few guest. Our class was very successful. We picked Pebbles for the subject matter in two different poses.
Our students was very involved and several of them completed their quilt top.
At our October meeting, two of our students brought their completed quilts to show and tell.
If you are in the Detroit area and would like Bizzy Lady and I to teach a class for your group, just contact us on here, emails at firstname.lastname@example.org or Instagram and we would love to speak with you.
Until Next time…
I will be taking over 52Quilters social media sites for the week of September 26th, week 39 (Diva Dane did week 33). Please visit and follow as I share highlights and aspects of my quilting journey and adventures on www.52quilters.com blog, @52quilters on Instagram and @52quilters on Twitter.
As Diva Dane mentioned, she has found another obsession and dragged me along with her, making bags. I am still working on my Lorraine bag from Crafty Gemini’s Video Bag of the Month Club where Diva Dane has already made 2 (I always lovingly call her Overachiever to which she responds Whatever – LOL). I love the creative process but not so much if it involves pain or excessive struggle. Installing grommets using the hand tool kit falls into this category. So I bought a grommet machine. I am waiting on it to arrive at which time I will finish my bag. I will share my review of the grommet machine once I receive and use it.
I too used cork fabric (purchased from Sew Sweetness) along with Tula Pink fabric. As I start to make more bags, I find that I like the look of the more sturdier fabrics such as the cork, vinyls, and home decor fabrics for my bags. So I will be experimenting more with those fabrics either alone or pairing them with cotton fabrics.
I chose to use the cork fabric for my strap and really like it. The strap feels sturdy. I chose not to use any interfacing (such as Pellon Shapeflex) in the strap. I was concerned that when using the cork and folding it multiple times to create the strap, I would have an issue with bulkiness and trouble sewing through the layers. I used a 90/14 needle and had no trouble. So I will definitely be using it again.
Well I have a busy week ahead so I am trying to get a head start.
Until next time…..
I can’t believe that today is the second day of Fall. I am not ready for the weather change. I hope it stays warm for a very long time. I am really into making bags now. It’s so funny, now I see patterns and I have to have them. LOL So when I find one, I then pass it over to Bizzy Lady so that I drag her into my madness.
I have completed the Crafty Gemini September Bag of the month. Its called the Loraine bag. This bag has 12 grommets to make the drawstring at the top. This is the first bag that I made.
I have had a really busy summer. Lots of outdoor activities like bike riding. As shown in a previous post, Diva Dane got a new bike and so did I.
Lots of travel – Bahamas, Martha’s Vineyard, Kentucky Bourbon Trail, AQS in Grand Rapids, Michigan, etc. This means I really haven’t been doing much crafting. Things are starting to get back to normal or routine (I really don’t think I know what normal is). I am anxious to get working on the laundry list of projects I have accumulated. So with good intentions, I joined a number of clubs this year. I have printed the patterns and put them in project bags with supplies. I still have to select fabric for most of them but I am excited to start clearing my list.
One of the clubs I recently joined along with Diva Dane is Crafty Gemini’s Bag of the Month Club. In a previous post, you saw Diva Dane’s first bag from August, the Stacie Bag. Here is my Stacie Bag. I want to say that I really like Crafty Gemini’s and Jenny Doan Missouri Star Quilt Co.’s instructional videos. I follow them and make a lot of projects/patterns they feature. Continue reading
