Modern Log Cabin

The first featured pattern is a design that Diva Dane came up with. We love playing around with different shapes and designs.  This pattern is a very simple and quick small quilt to make.

Supplies

8 various colorful fat quarters

1/4 yd solid background fabric

1/4 yd fabric for binding

20 x 20″ square backing fabric

20 x 20″ batting (Warm and Natural recommended)

 

Cutting

 Measurements include 1/4″ seam allowance.

 Cut (2) 2 1/2 inch strips and (1) 6 1/2 inch strip from the background fabric. Cut all strips the width of fabric. Cut the following from the strips:

  •  3 (2 1/2 x 6 1/2″) strip, label B2, B6, B7
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 2 1/2″) square, label B4
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label B3
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 16 1/2″) strip, label B5
  • 1 (6 1/2 x 8 1/2″) strip, label B1

Cut (1) 2 1/2 inch strip from each of the assorted fat quarter fabrics. Cut and label the following from the strips:

  •  1 (2 1/2 x 2 1/2″) square, label A
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label C
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 6 1/2″) strip, label D
  • 3 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label E1, E2, E3
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label F
  • 2 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label G1, G2
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 12 1/2″) strip, label G3
  • 3 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label H1, H2, H3
  • 1 (2 1/2 x 4 1/2″) strip, label I

Block Assembly

  Section 1

  1. Refer to the quilt diagram. Join strip F to strip E1. Press seams open. Join strip E2 and E3 to each side of sewn strip combo (F and E1). Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  2. Join strip B4 to strip D. Press seams open. Join the previous sewn strip combo from Step 1 to sewn strip combo (B4 and D). Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  3. Join strip C to strip B3. Press seams open. Join the previous sewn strip combo from Step 2 to sewn strip combo (C and B3). Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  4. Join strip A to strip B2. Press seams open. Join the previous sewn strip combo from Step 3 to sewn strip combo (A and B2). Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  5. Join the previous sewn strip combo from Step 4 to B1 Square. Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.

Section 2

  1. Join strip H1 to strip I. Press seams open. Join strip H2 and H3 to each side of sewn strip combo (H1 and I). Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  2. Join strip B6 and B7 to each side of previous sewn strip combo from Step 7. Press seams open and set sewn strips aside.
  3. Join strip G1 and G2 to each side of previous sewn strip combo from Step 6. Press seams open and set sewn strips aside. Join strip G3 to the just sewn strip combo.

Quilt Assembly

  1. Join strip combo from Section 1 to B5 Strip. Press seams open.
  2. Join strip combo from Step 9 to strip combo from Section 2. Press seams open.

Finishing

  1.  Measure quilt top. Cut batting and backing 2″ wider (on all sides) than finished quilt top.
  2. Layer backing, batting and quilt top; baste.
  3. Quilt as desired and bind.
